Responding to the government’s victory in the Commons, the editor of The Liberal magazine, Benjamin Ramm, said: “This legislation weakens liberalism and mocks democracy, and damages the Liberal Democrats beyond repair. For the party that called itself ‘the Real Alternative’, today is at best a capitulation, at worst a betrayal. In this coalition, the Lib Dems are the cloak that hides the dagger”.
Ramm called for a new militancy within the party, with options including deselection; standing ‘Yellow Book’ candidates against those MPs that voted for the motion; and using proposed legislation for recall to challenge parliamentarians who won their constituencies on the back of key pledges: at least a dozen Lib Dem MPs owe their seat to the student vote – HE funding was always more than just another policy for the party.
